SAUDADE is SODADE in the Portuguese-creole spoken in Cape Verde. For me, the very best example of the meaning and feeling of this beautiful word is expressed in this AMAZING song by Cesária Évora (Cape Verde, 1941-2011). People call Cesária “the voice of longing” or “the Queen of the “morna”, which is a soulful musical genre, related to the Portuguese “fado.”
Below are two videos of Cesária Évora singing the song ‘SODADE’:
* Cesária Évora in a live presentation at the Le Grand Rex, April 2004, with a great band.
* Cesária Évora in a live presentation with Bonga, a singer and songwriter from Angola, April 2011. Cesária’s sad, deep voice combined with the hoarse voice of Bonga is just sublime. This duet is part of the great CD “Cesária Évora &”
